MOST VERDANT KGALAGADI

In the second half of January, from our very first outing we drove through many clouds of dancing butterflies and this joyous sight soon represented the essence of this trip.

The good rains of late had transformed the desert landscape of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park of the Northern Cape into verdant expanses where its camel thorn trees were laden with fresh seed pods and the classic views of the Kalahari red dunes are at the moment, covered with a great variety of beautiful grass to their very tops.

We were told that it was 40 years since the last time the park had been so green.

Everyone made use of the long puddles of water in the roads, from birds bathing and drinking to springbok and jackals nervously lapping a few mouthfuls of water between the passing cars. Butterflies congregating by the hundreds to suck moisture from the muddy edges were lifting gracefully, like fairy dust on this most unusual sight.
With such abundance all around, all forms of life were thriving, youngster's everywhere and gemsbok belly deep in the tall grasses under blue skies where magnificent white clouds built up all day. We enjoyed many great sightings of animals and birds and could often observe their behavior at leisure in the sweltering mid-summer heat.
It was a memorable experience toasted with a glass of champagne at Kieliekrankie, our favorite secluded accommodation on a dune ridge with a grandiose view.

We feel privileged to have seen this.

FLICK FLACK THROUGH ZURICH

Suspend belief, use your imagination and follow me on a creative walk through Zurich where I transformed the urban landscape into designs and montages.

All these photographs were taken with my Huawei P10 mobile phone. As I encounter the scenes that intrigued me, I often compose the original shot anticipating the manipulation of the subjects into graphic results. I have learned to recognize what will work but the element of surprise is always there once I post process the pictures.

Many things drift through my mind as I shoot or Photoshop these images such as reflections, wood cut effect, land art, mandalas, mirror montages to name a few.

From strong patterns, to soft water colour effects, the process never stops fascinating me as I re-kindle my Graphic Art background with pleasure.

It is a wonderful therapy for which I am extremely grateful in this peculiar time of pandemic and lockdown.

I am never bored and always find solace in my photography.

PATTERNS AND TEXTURES

Our latest outing was in the Betty’s Bay area where a savage wind was blowing so we took refuge in the Harold Porter Garden which is always a favorite destination.

This lovely, secluded garden is set between mountain and sea in the center of the coastal fynbos where the flora is at its richest. The mountain slopes of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve were particularly beautiful and as we walked along the river, my attention was drawn to the various patterns and texture I found in nature.
