KAROO NATIONAL PARK

At the end of April, we started a three-and-a-half-week trip to visit 5 National Parks & Nature Reserves in the Northern Cape. Some were familiar but I had not seen most of them yet and it was a pleasure to discover these new places. They were looking at their best and covered in grass after the profuse recent rains in these areas which are often severely affected by periods of drought. The vegetation was so lush, Guy could hardly recognize some of them, despite having been there many times for work during his long career with Cape Nature.

Karoo National Park, near Beaufort West was our first stop and the dramatic landscape did not fail to amaze us. The impressive Klipspringer Pass winds its way up to the Rooiwalle lookout point, giving a clear view of the fascinating rock formations of the area which is typical of the Karoo. The vast panorama view from our chalet was superb, especially in the evening light.

We saw most of the large herbivores such as red hartebeest, eland, zebra, kudu and springbok and enjoyed birding along the various routes
